많은 종양, 그 중에서도 연부 조직 종양은 fusion protein 이 알려져 있는 것이 꽤 된다. 따라서 fusion protein 이 있을 것을 간접적으로 확인할 수 있는 breakapart probe FISH 를 사용해서 진단에 도움을 줄 수가 있다. fusion protein 에 의한 mRNA 를 확인하는 것이 제일 좋을 것 같지만, mRNA도 RNA 이니만큼 포르말린에 의한 손상도 있고, 여러 군데에서 일어나기 때문에 하나의 primer 로는 찾을 수 없을 수도 있다.
